As the winds
of ecumenicalism prevail in today's liberal
age of false
prophecy, Biblical
doctrine is seen to be divisive and harmful. If only we would center on
"sweet Jesus" it is said that all would be well.
Yes, doctrine can be divisive, but, no, not all would be well. To ignore
doctrine can only result in spiritual ignorance of God as He has revealed
Himself in the Bible.
Sound Biblical doctrine is not the problem; it is the solution. The problem arises because so many
believers are Biblically illiterate. Like a bank teller, whose recognition of
legitimate currency enables him to spot a phony counterfeit bill, so we need the
discernment that comes only from familiarity with scripture.
The apostle Paul warned about all this in I
Timothy 4:1:
Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.
After nearly 2,000 years during
which men have added to and taken away from God's word, what passes for
Christianity is so distorted that we see untold division and apathy. Judge for
yourself if Paul was right.
Believers need to become like the
Berean church who in Acts 17:11 is said to be "more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so."
Satan, described in scripture as an
angel of light, has for centuries posed as a believer, even using the pulpit to
preach to deceive
those who are gullible and without a heart for God. False prophecy is not
limited to the cults but from within the Church itself, which accounts for so
much division and error in Christianity today.
Make no
mistake. We're in a war, and
the winners will be those equipped with the full armor of God, as described in Ephesians
6:12-17:
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,
but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness
of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in
the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded
your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and
having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all,
taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery
darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God.
